The years 1880 to 1890 were notable for important work by many artists, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec among them. One of the most fertile periods in modern art history, the late 19th century was an era in which a diverse range of aesthetic sensibilities were cultivated. It was also during this period that the original Mitsubishi Ichigokan was built. The museum concentrates on collecting graphic art and artifacts that were produced during this era, and in the future, plans to present these works to the public in a series of special exhibitions.

This collection of approximately 250 works of graphic art was originally owned by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901). After his death, the entire collection was entrusted to the gallery owner Maurice Joyant, the artist’s close friend and greatest advocate. Until recently, it remained in the care of Joyant’s relatives, who eventually agreed to part with the collection.
Along with major lithographs and posters that serve as the essence of Toulouse-Lautrec’s art, the collection includes rarely seen printed works and obscure items that were produced for the artist’s personal use such as banquet menus. Moreover, nearly all of the works are decorated with the artist’s monogram, formed out of the initials “HTL.” The person who applied this scarlet seal was none other than Joyant himself, who as the caretaker of Toulouse-Lautrec’s estate contributed greatly to furthering his friend’s reputation. The presence of this small stamp conveys not only the importance of the collection but also the deep bond that united the two men through this group of works.-

On April 2009, the Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum signed an agreement to form a sister-museum relationship with the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum, located in the city of Albi in the department of Tarn in southwestern France. The museum, located in the Palais de la Berbie, which was erected as a fortress in the 13th century and used for generations as a bishop’s residence, was opened in July 1922. Through the cooperation of local governments, regional corporations, and individual citizens, the facility is widely known as a sightseeing destination and currently attracts some 160,000 visitors annually. The museum’s collection, representing the ultimate in both quantity and quality, consists of approximately 1,000 works, including paintings, prints, and drawings, that were donated by the famous artist’s mother, the Comtesse Adèle de Toulouse-Lautrec.

L’ Estampe originale is a collection of lithographs that was published in a limited edition in Paris between 1893 and 1895. The collection consisted of some 100 works produced with a variety of techniques by young artists who were active in the city during the late 19th century such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Pierre Bonnard, Maurice Denis, and Paul Gauguin.
Valued as one of the world’ s rarest collections, the noted Swiss collector Samuel Josefowitz’s entire holdings are now housed in the Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum, Tokyo. This acquisition represents a significant collection of late 19th century French lithographic works that includes the Nabi artist Pierre Bonnard’s album Quelques aspects de la vie de Paris and Maurice Denis’album Amour.-

A collection of decorative arts collected by New York-based collectors John and Miyoko Unno Davey with “Japonisme in Everyday Life” as the theme. The collection consists of approximately 180 pieces of china, silverware and glassware, which include many masterpieces by Minton, Royal Worcester, Louis Comfort Tiffany, and Émile Gallé. Their exotic and beautiful style eloquently tells how deeply these beautiful everyday items inspired by Japan, infiltrated and enriched people’s life in Britain, Europe and United States in the late 19th century.

In 1897, Baron Robert de Domecy asked Redon to decorate the dining room of his castle near Vézelay in Bourgogne. Decorative paintings were fixed on the walls of the dining room between 1900 and 1901, 16 of which remain in existence. All but the Grand Bouquet were removed from the dining room in 1978 and are now housed at the Musée d’Orsay. Not even a clear photograph of the Grand Bouquet is known to exist despite the fact that it was not only the centerpiece of the dining room decoration, but also was Redon’s largest pastel drawing and has a historically significant meaning in decorative paintings. Therefore, there was a big sensation when the work was exhibited in the Redon Exhibition in Paris in 2011, which was 110 years after it was first displayed at Château de Domecy. The following year the work was exhibited at our museum in Japan.

Félix Vallotton (1865-1925) was born in Lausanne, Switzerland, and played an active role—together with Bonnard, Vuillard and Denis in Paris— as a member of the Avant-garde artists, Nabis, of the late 19th century. This painting depicts the Luxembourg Gardens glowing in the sunset through a flat surface covered with colors and simplified layout structure, which characterizes the Les Nabis era. In addition to this oil painting, our museum houses approximately 180 prints by Vallotton. The woodcuts, which depict crowds in Paris, a war scene and the intimate relationship between a man and a woman using only black-and-white bold compositions had a significant influence on future artistic development.

The Japonisme movement is one of the driving forces of the exhibition activity at our museum. The “Important Literature on Japonisme” is a collection of carefully selected literature created in the same period regarding Japonisme that swept Western Europe in the 19th century. The collection consists of books of prints including Judith Gautier’s poetry book Poëme de la libellule published in 1885, featuring Yamamoto Hosui’s illustrations, and books and magazines on Japonisme including Le Japon Artistique, published from 1888 to 1891, edited by the art dealer Siegfried Bing. The collection also includes catalogues of Universal Expositions held in different cities, sales catalogues of Japanese arts including ceramics and Ukiyo-e prints and other materials.
